British Airways Apprenticeship | Apprentice - IAG Cargo Operations, Heathrow

Job Description

Length of programme 18 Months

Based at Heathrow, you’ll be at the heart of a fast-moving, global logistics operation. Through a series of rotations, you’ll build your skills and knowledge in a variety of roles and teams, in both our Warehouse and Head Office.

This will enable you to build real experience of handling freight, using our systems and liaising with colleagues and customers. With safety and security front of mind, you’ll offer all round support to ensure everything is handled correctly, and gets to where it’s meant to be on time.

There will be lots of opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues, and to enjoy extensive training and support. It all adds up to a challenging learning experience that will lead to an NVQ Level 2 in Warehousing and Storage in your first year.


Duties and Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

  • Send, receive and inspect customers’ freight.

  • Work with people from different departments across our business.

  • Operate a variety of systems, inputting data.

  • Have the scope to identify and suggest improvements.

  • Gain broad experience, skills and knowledge through on-the-job learning and formal training.

  • Learn our health, safety and security standards inside out, so they underpin everything you do.


Job Requirements

  • Must hold or be expected to obtain the required qualifications before the start of the apprenticeship;

  • Two GCSEs in English and Maths grade 9-3 (A*-D) or equivalent.

  • Confidence working with a variety of IT systems.

  • A good team player with effective communication skills.

  • Self-motivation to work under pressure and prioritise.

  • Logical problem-solving skills.

  • A strong organiser with keen attention to detail.

British Airways Apprenticeship | Apprentice - Aircraft Maintenance, Heathrow

Job Description

Length of programme: 3 Years

On this three-year programme, you’ll work alongside, and learn from some incredibly talented engineers. Every day, you’ll develop your skills on real aircraft, in a real job. Over a series of rotations, you’ll work on all our aircraft fleets, gaining the knowhow to help keep them in perfect working order. You’re going to be busy. Alongside comprehensive on-the-job training, you’ll be studying towards the qualifications you need to become one of our future Aircraft Engineers.

You’ll need the confidence to communicate with people at all levels, and the common sense to act on your own initiative. It can be high-pressure work in an ever-changing business. You’ll need the flexibility to adapt to different demands, while always putting safety first. As you’ll be a valued part of the team, your input will be welcome on everything from process to practice.

Please note, that the initial induction to the business for this Apprenticeship will take place at our London Heathrow base. For the remainder of the first year of this Apprenticeship you will then be based off-site and living away from home.

  • Work with our engineering teams and develop your skills by helping with the maintenance of our full fleet of aircraft.

  • Be involved in routine aircraft servicing and help with any minor repairs or modifications.

  • Learn about the importance of health, safety and security in everything our engineering teams do.

  • Develop your engineering skills and knowledge through a combination of on-the-job learning and coursework.

  • Gain formal qualifications that will set you up for a successful career as an Aircraft Mechanic or Engineer.


Job Requirements

  • You need to hold, or be predicted to obtain, the following grades before the Apprenticeship:

  • Five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent which must include Science, English & Maths.

  • Maths must be minimum Level 5/6 (B).

  • A genuine interest in, and passion for engineering.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Awareness of safety issues.

Job Description

Over three and a half years, you’ll earn your stripes under the best engineers in the business. They’ll hone your engineering skills, giving you aircraft components to repair in both ‘ramp’ and ‘hangar’ environments. You’ll rotate through different workshops, picking up various sets of knowledge, so you understand the nature of every highly sophisticated component. Every day will feel new, and you’re going to be busy. Alongside training on the job, you’ll be studying for the qualifications you need to become one of our future Workshop Engineers.

You’ll have the confidence to communicate with people at all levels and the common sense to act on your own initiative. It can be high-pressure work and you might need to adapt to industry changes, while always putting safety first. But, as regulated as this environment can be, we’ll also look to you for fresh ideas. We want your input on everything from process to practice.


Duties and Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

  • Work with our engineering teams and develop your skills fixing aircraft components and conducting ‘on-wing’ repairs across our full fleet of aircraft.

  • Be involved in component workshop checks and help with significant composite and sheet metal repairs. You’ll be working with and repairing components using the latest materials, processes and technologies, from a simple panel job to a complete engine thrust reverser.

  • Learn about the importance of health, safety and security in everything our engineering teams do.

  • Develop your engineering skills and knowledge through a combination of on-the-job learning and coursework.

  • Gain formal qualifications that will set you up for a successful career as an Aircraft Workshop Technician.


Job Requirements

  • Must hold or be predicted to obtain the following grades before the Apprenticeship start date:

  • Five GCSE grades 9 -4 (A*-C) or equivalent (must include Science, Maths & English; minimum 5 (C)) achieved prior to start date.

  • Your application will not be considered if you have achieved prior qualifications in the following:

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Engineering.

  • BTEC Level 3 in Engineering.

  • You will be required to attend college full time in Kingston upon Thames and must be able to travel or relocate.
